We are the Davis and Morrison Families and we run Shorthorn cattle and Australian Shepherds on our farm in southern Ohio. We focus on quality at Sugar Grove, and we always strive to be better than the year before.
Shorthorns were originally bred as a dual purpose breed in England and Scotland but eventually farmers broke off and focused on beef and another focused on dairy. Shorthorn and shorthorn cross cattle have an excellent rate of gain, good feed conversion, and increased marbling and tenderness. Overall the shorthorn breed is an ideal choice for the production of high quality beef in any farming system.
Shorthorns possess amazing qualities for adaptability, mothering ability, reproductive performance, feed conversion, longevity, and our favorite – good disposition. Shorthorns are notorious for docility! I’ve been around a lot of cattle and shorthorns are by far the easiest to work with. When you can get out of your truck walk up to your herd and not one gets stirred up, that speaks volumes for the breed.
Australian Shepherds are definitely the breed for us! When trying to manage farm life an extra hand (or paws) never hurt. I would have 20 Aussies if Jared would let me! Despite their names Aussies were developed on ranches in the US during the 19th century. Australian Shepherds are loyal, affectionate, protective, intelligent, active, good natured dogs. We don’t recommend Aussies to someone who wants to be a couch potato, while our dogs do like naps they are a working dog and work is what they’ll do. If you don’t give them a job/exercise, they will give themselves one and you probably won’t like the outcome of that job! But if you’re looking for a tireless, brainy, trainable 4 legged partner for work or fun you’ve come to the right spot. We strive to always better the breed as well as our own dogs.
